Started framing out this sketch.

Welding completely DONE!

This is a big moment for me. I put all distractions aside and finished welding and grinding. Next step is putting a patina on it. I'm very happy with it which is unusual. I love the motion and struggle the piece is going through. As if to find a more comfortable position. Something to ease the pain it's going through. The sculpture completely changes as you walk around it. Sometimes it's slender and majestic, other times it's thick and twisted. Ok, yes, for now I like it. Onto the next one.

Finishing

Ton and tons of grinding and sanding. Need to start experimenting with a patina. I'm not too happy with the upper tentacles. They just don't flow right. Trying to ignore them but if they continue to disturb me, I'll have to start over.

 

New piece

Started this in the winter. Trying to decide on a patina. Would love some kind of burnt oil finish. I'll try some tests. Moved from the lower studio to the upper studio for the season. Missing from this set of pics is the companion piece.

Massing complete

Finally finished massing it. Now the endless hours of welding and grinding begin. I'm very happy with it. There are subtle issues that I would change if I could, but at this stage it's just not worth un-doing things. The issues are so minor. Overall, I'm very happy. The proportion issues disolved when all the legs were in place.

 

 

 

 

 

She's got legs

Two legs on, two to go. Not completely happy with the proportion of the legs and their relationship to the top. I would basically have to start over on the legs if I changed anything. I'll keep going. Maybe it'll all come together at the end. Need more steel.

Back to work

I won't even discuss the fact that my last post was one year ago. Still working on a solution for that.
Anyway, moved the top part of the sculpture to the upper level of the barn. Put a hoist in and lifted away. I needed to step back and really look at this thing before continuing. I'm very happy with the shape and life it's taking on.
It'll be about 11' tall.
I need to start investigating a patina for it. It's steel and needs to be sealed. Maybe burning oil onto it.
